Triple Townhouse

New York, NY

LSS combined three landmarked townhouses in the Carnegie Hill Historic District. The program required both intimate spaces for a modern home and larger spaces for public events and a contemporary art collection. A new five-story atrium was carved into the center of the building to bring in light and to connect the various spaces to the rear garden.

A dynamic stair creates unexpected views and spaces as it winds its way up through the house. Massive walnut frames penetrate the existing masonry walls to connect the atrium to perimeter rooms on each floor.

The material properties of wood, plaster, metal, and stone bridges derived a language of detailing between the heavy Georgian masonry of the facade of the building and the new tranquil interior.
